“Lo, these lives of languid moralities Ruled by torpidity and turpitude. All atrocities are banalities; How woeful the death of our rectitude! The loving we refuse to lionize And the barbarous are whom we deem bold. The daring are whom we now demonize And the serpentine we do scarcely scold. The virgin’s virtue once was exalted, Malevolent malfeasance was assailed. The chaste are now chastised and assaulted; Oh, if only the pious had prevailed!” Such has been the sermon given in dread By every age's agѐd: “God is dead!”
